The collection is displayed in the city centre and changed twice every year. 3. Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) Annual Exhibition – Printer Ink Photography of Sheffield

Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) is an organisation comprising 75 camera clubs of Yorkshire with Sheffield being one of the founding members. Every year, the YPU organises an Annual Exhibition throughout the Yorkshire hosted at different places by different clubs. This is the first time in 51 years, Sheffield is getting an opportunity to host the exhibition.

Thousands of participants from across 800 YPU members are expected to take part in this event which will be inaugurated by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield. 200 prints and 200 DPI will be selected by three judges which will reflect the best amateur photography at the event.

The event is an exclusive printer ink photography showcased at Sheffield. The exhibition also displays a collection of historic images captured from the majestic landscape of Sheffield that serves as icing on the cake. Thousands of entries and hundreds of members from the public make this event a grand festival. This year the exhibition is taking place at Channing Hall.

4. Art Events at St Mary’s

Here I am is a combined visual arts exhibition by Neil Conroy and Lesley Sanderson that marks 2 decades of collaboration of these artists as Conroy/ Sanderson. Both of the artists go out of the way to display their large-scale sculptural work using video, drawings, neon and more. One can discover ideas of place and displacement through their creation. They display their artwork and images in a natural landscape while making physical interventions that confound the traditional expectations of visualising art. Their method of displaying the artwork and the work itself evokes our senses.

The event ‘Here I am’ is a component of Making Ways a new programme funded by Arts Council England. The purpose is to promote, celebrate and develop the extraordinary contemporary visual art created by the local talents. Here I am is already on from 22 February and is open until 20 May 2018.

6. Hope is Strong

Hope is Strong manifests the power of art and questions, the world is increasingly seeing civil liberties and minority rights that are on the verge of turbulence. Art has the power to leave the observer with an effect of contemplation that compels one to think. Hope is Strong is one such masterpiece and will display the work from Ai Weiwei, one of the world’s famous artists driven by political interests. In addition, Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgreave Archive (An Injury to One is an Injury to All) will be put on a display that shows a confrontation between the police and the striking miners in South Yorkshire. The event will also showcase work by other famous artists.

Hope is Strong will be taking place as an integral event of 2018 Protest & Activism that is backed by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act.

The exhibition is open at the Weston Park Museum from 17 February and is set to attract more visitors by 10 June 2018.

7. The Art House Events

1. PAINTED FABRICS: WORK NOT CHARITY

The Art House in Sheffield provides a platform to artists from all genres to showcase their talent and bring creativity and innovation back to life each year. Work Not Charity is a WEA project that involves a number of artists and partners that have produced a creative collection of artwork.

The Work Not Charity is put on display at the Art House from 31st March and will be open for visitors until 17th April 2018. The exhibition will also showcase Original Painted Fabric items from the collection gathered from Museums Sheffield.

2. GROUP STUDENT EXHIBITION: LIFE DRAWING

Take a look at the work produced by students ranging from amateurs to experienced. The artwork displayed at the exhibition is made by the students from three different life drawing groups. The work demonstrates the use of a wide range of processes, methods and media that are used in classes.

The student’s creations will be put on display at the Art House from 21st April to 2nd May 2018.

3. JONNY PRITT

Art House will be demonstrating Jonny Pritt’s artwork – an artist who has been drawing and painting passionately since childhood. He is also a songwriter and a member of multiple bands. One can see childlike innocence as well as a touch of sarcasm in his work. Jonny has taken inspirations from the literature including Dylan Thomas Collected Poems 1934-1952, Filmation’s Bravestarr-The Trail Drive, Philip Larkin, The Whitsun Weddings and Bananaman Annual 1985.

The exhibition will go on from 2nd April to 15th April 2018. You will have the opportunity to meet the artist on 5th April 2018.

8. Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography

The National Portrait Gallery is bringing together the breathtaking art photography from four of the most celebrated personalities, Lewis Carroll, Julia Margaret Cameron, Oscar Rejlander, and Clementina Hawarden. The four artist have contributed to the photography of the Victorian era through experimental approach and radical attitude towards photography.

Victorian Giants, the first major exhibition will be reflecting the mix contributions and talents from the four artists. Visitors will have an opportunity to gaze at some of the most phenomenal artworks from the photographic history.
